I first started hybrid training in 2014 back when I was a bodybuilding fanatic, who am I kidding, I still am! I found hybrid training was an easy way to help me keep lean year round & I immediately fell in love with the community - not just in “my” gym, but the wider community.

After spending some time abroad in the UK I moved to Dunedin to study, I found a local gym & this time, I was all in! I shortly found a love for competing and started entering in as many local comps as I could. I love travelling all over the country, getting to meet hundreds of people who all share the same passions as I do but from vastly different backgrounds.

While competing I loved seeing how the elite athletes moved & how they’d strategise a workout - this showed me how much I love coaching & why I love exercise! Because no matter who you are or what you’re capable of, it all comes down to just 2 things:

  1. How well you can do the basics and;

  2. How much effort you are willing to give!

Fun Fact: I once danced on stage at the Moulin Rouge in Paris!

I began my fitness journey when I was a teenager. The phrase that I always heard women use for motivation was "nothing tastes as good as skinny feels". Because of this, as a growing 15 year old, my goal was to lose weight. Unsurprisingly, I found this an incredibly unfulfilling and unhealthy way to approach exercise and nutrition.

At 18, I discovered strength training at a local gym in Timaru and instantly fell in love. I met women who were confident in their bodies because of what they could do with them, not because of how they looked. These women became my role models and encouraged me to nourish my body rather than starve it. I set performance-based goals—achieving my first pull-up, push-up, and a 100kg squat.

I went on to gain a Bachelor of Science in Human Nutrition from the University of Otago and am now committed to dispelling the misinformation spread by the diet industry. My ultimate goal as a coach is to make sure my members feel confident in their bodies because they are proud of what they are capable of, not what they look like!

Fun fact: I make a delicious Whisky Sour!

I was introduced to hybrid training in 2011 by a workmate and started trying out various workouts in my garage gym. The first workout I did was The Chief. It is still one of my favourites.

I joined CD in 2012 after I finished playing rugby. My first non “in house” competition was the 2013 Regionals in Australia as a member of CDs team. It scratched my competitive itch for a long time and I competed regularly for the next few years but I haven’t competed since late 2018.

I now train to maintain a good GPP (General Physical Preparedness) and to keep my ideal body composition.

What I would say to someone thinking about joining our gym is that it is infinitely scalable and literally anyone can do a version of the daily workout.

A not so interesting fact about me is that I love all things Marvel and DC. I even have Justice League and Avengers duvet cover sets.

Despite a sport and fitness heavy background, I hadn’t tried hybrid training until 2019. I instantly loved the intensity and variety of movement, which I had never encountered before. I love all things fitness and love mixing up training. I run, practice pilates, yoga and do my own training weekly outside of CFM’s classes.

I personally love the buzz you get during and after a good workout, and the epic feeling of achieving something you never thought you would be able to do. The beauty of hybrid training is it is super accessible and scalable, yet challenging and rewarding! Anyone can come along and everything in the programme can be tailored to suit each person on any given day.

Outside of the gym: I am a chartered accountant (although I don’t really use the qualification anymore!) and work in a two-man Treasury and Funding team for MTF Finance - I love what I do!

Fun fact: I competed at the 2015 Yoga Asana Nationals back when I was a dedicated yogi!

I got my judge's certificate in 2017 to help judge the Open. I have also been coaching for a few years, focusing on teaching basic lifting movements. 2018 I started Olympic weightlifting, which has since been my main sport. Since starting Olympic lifting, I have competed in South Island championships and national secondary school competitions, placing silver and bronze in all of them. I've also participated in multiple club competitions at Otago Weightlifting.

The best advice I could give someone wanting to join the gym is just come in. People often think that they need to be a certain level of fit and strong to even enter a gym, which isn't true! Everything can be modified and scaled, so no matter what, everyone can participate. CFM really is for anyone with any ability.

Fun fact: I love to bake and cook and have an Instagram page dedicated to my recipes and the food I eat - @poppyspoppinfood
